Bluetooth tracker battery life and the CR2032 swap
"Up to two years" is the standard Bluetooth tracker battery claim, and it is the kind of claim that sounds like marketing until you look at what the radio is actually doing. It is not marketing — it is arithmetic — but it comes with conditions worth understanding, because a few of them are under your control. This post covers why a coin cell lasts that long, what shortens it, and how to change one without breaking anything.
Why one coin cell lasts that long
A CR2032 holds roughly 220 milliamp-hours. That is a very small amount of energy: it would run a phone for a few minutes. Spread across two years it works out to an average draw in the region of ten microamps, which sounds impossible until you realise how little the tag does.
For the overwhelming majority of every second, the radio is off and the chip is asleep. A few times a second it wakes, transmits a very short advertising packet announcing itself, and goes back to sleep. It is not maintaining a connection. It is not streaming anything. It is not listening continuously. Bluetooth Low Energy was designed from the start around exactly this pattern, and the whole point of the design was to make coin-cell devices practical.
Two consequences follow. First, the tag does not get "used up" faster because you look at it more often — checking the map costs the tag nothing, because the map is populated by other devices hearing its broadcast anyway. Second, the thing that genuinely costs power is the buzzer. Ringing a tag repeatedly is by far the most expensive thing you can ask of it.
What actually shortens a Bluetooth tracker battery
In rough order of impact:
- Cold. Coin cells lose usable capacity as the temperature drops, and a tag left in an unheated van, a shed or a bike frame through a British winter will show a lower state of charge than the same tag indoors. It often recovers when it warms up, which is why a "low battery" warning in January is sometimes a false alarm.
- Sounding the alarm. Each ring is a burst of real current. A tag used to find something twice a week for a year has done noticeably more work than one that sat quietly on a spare set of keys.
- Cheap or old cells. A supermarket own-brand CR2032 that has been on the shelf for three years starts with less than its rated capacity. Buy from somewhere with turnover and check the date on the pack.
- Damaged sealing. A case that has been dropped hard enough to distort will let moisture in, and moisture across the terminals drains a cell slowly and invisibly.
Heat matters much less than cold for these chemistries, so a tag on a car keyring in a hot glovebox in August is not the problem people assume.
How to replace the CR2032, step by step
The job takes under a minute and needs nothing but your hands.
- Buy the right cell. CR2032 — three volts, 20 mm across, 3.2 mm thick. The number is literally the dimensions. Do not substitute a CR2016 or CR2025; they are thinner and will make poor contact.
- Open the case. Press the back firmly and twist anticlockwise. Most tags of this design use a shallow bayonet fitting, so it turns perhaps a quarter turn and lifts off. If it resists, you are pressing too lightly rather than turning too weakly.
- Lift the old cell out. A fingernail at the edge is enough. Note which way up it sits — the flat, marked face is positive and almost always faces outwards.
- Do not touch both faces of the new cell. Skin oils on the contact surfaces are a real cause of poor connections. Hold it by the rim.
- Drop it in, positive side out, and press gently until it seats.
- Refit the back and turn clockwise until it stops. Most tags chime when power is restored, which is your confirmation.
- Check the app. The item should show a healthy battery state within a few minutes.
If the tag does not chime, take the cell out, wipe both faces with a dry cloth, and refit it. Nine times out of ten that is the whole fault.
Disposal, and one safety note
Loose coin cells are genuinely dangerous to small children — swallowing one causes serious internal burns very quickly. Keep new cells in their packaging until the moment you fit them, and put the old one straight into a battery box rather than a drawer or a bin.
Most UK supermarkets, DIY sheds and larger electrical shops have a battery collection point near the entrance. Coin cells go in it. They should not go in household waste or the kerbside recycling.
