Bluetooth tracker interference: Wi-Fi, ovens and crowds
Bluetooth tracker interference is the suspicion behind a lot of one star reviews: the tag worked in the hallway, then it did not, and the router or the neighbours get the blame. Some of that suspicion is well founded and some of it is misdirected. This piece answers the questions people actually type, one per heading, with the physics kept to the part that changes what you do.
Does a Bluetooth tracker slow down my Wi-Fi?
No, not in any way you could measure. A finding tag spends almost all of its life asleep and wakes to send an advertising packet lasting well under a millisecond, a few times a second at most. Wi-Fi, by comparison, is moving megabytes. The two share the 2.4 GHz band, so in the strictest sense they do compete, but the tag's share of the airtime is a rounding error next to one person scrolling a video. If your broadband is struggling, the causes worth investigating are the router's position, the number of devices on the band and the neighbours' networks, not the disc on your keys.
Why does a Bluetooth tracker drop out in a busy railway station?
Because bodies absorb 2.4 GHz and a crowd is a lot of bodies. Water absorbs energy at this frequency, people are mostly water, and a packed platform at Clapham Junction puts dozens of them between your phone and a bag on the floor. The band is also genuinely busier in that setting, with hundreds of handsets, headphones and payment terminals all talking, so the odd packet is lost as well as attenuated. The practical effect is that the range at which your phone can ring the tag collapses from tens of metres to a few. The tag has not stopped working, it has stopped being heard, and a step or two closer usually restores it.
Does a microwave oven interfere with a Bluetooth tag?
Yes, briefly and locally. Domestic ovens work at around 2.45 GHz, which is inside the same band, and a small amount of that energy escapes the cabinet. While the oven is running you may find a tag in the same room slow to answer or briefly unreachable, and the effect stops when the timer does. It is a genuine nuisance in one situation only: testing a tag on a kitchen worktop next to a microwave that somebody has just started, then concluding the tag is faulty. Move a room away and try again before deciding anything.
Do two Bluetooth trackers interfere with each other?
Not to any degree that matters. Each tag transmits for a fraction of a millisecond at a time on one of three advertising channels, so two of them in the same bag are overwhelmingly likely to be talking at different instants, and any collision simply means one packet is missed and the next one, along a moment later, is not. Owners regularly run several tags on one iPhone without the tags being the problem. What does happen in a full bag is ordinary shielding: a tag underneath a laptop, a tin or a set of spanners is quieter than a tag near the zip, and that is geometry rather than interference.
What is adaptive frequency hopping, and does my tag use it?
Adaptive frequency hopping is Bluetooth's built-in answer to a crowded band: a connection moves between channels many times a second and learns to skip the ones that are busy, so a Wi-Fi network parked on a fixed channel is stepped around rather than fought. A connected tag benefits from that.
The interesting exception is advertising. The three channels a tag uses to announce itself are fixed rather than hopping, and they were chosen to sit in the quieter gaps left by the three Wi-Fi channels most access points use. That is why a tag announcing itself in a flat full of routers usually still gets through. It is also why the failure mode you see is a shorter useful range rather than a tag that vanishes from the map: the advertisement is short, repeated and cheap to retry.
How do I tell interference from a flat battery or a fault?
Work through it in this order, which takes about five minutes and settles the question.
- Look at the Find My entry first. A last confirmed position and a timestamp tell you whether the tag was heard recently. A tag with a recent timestamp is alive.
- Move to a quiet room with no oven running and the router at least a few metres away. Stand in the middle of it with the tag on a table, not in a pocket.
- Ring it from your iPhone. If it sounds here and failed in the kitchen, you were dealing with the band, not the hardware.
- Check for a low battery flag on the item in Find My, then swap the CR2032 if there is one. A tired cell shortens range long before it kills the tag outright.

If the tag answers in a clear room and not in one particular corner of the house, you have found a dead spot rather than a defect, and the fix is where you keep the item rather than which tag you own.
How BlueTag behaves in a noisy band
