Cheap Bluetooth tracker vs expensive: what you pay for

A cheap Bluetooth tracker and an expensive one can behave identically for months and then differ sharply in one specific situation, and the whole buying decision turns on whether that situation is one you will ever be in. This is an attempt to take the question seriously rather than answer it with a verdict: what the extra money genuinely buys, what it demonstrably does not, and how to work out which side of the line your own losses fall on.

What the extra money actually buys

A second radio. This is the big one and it is real. Ultra Wideband measures the flight time of a pulse rather than guessing from signal strength, which lets a phone draw an arrow and a distance for the last few metres. It requires hardware in the tag and hardware in the phone, and it is the main reason a premium tag costs three or four times what a budget one does. Nothing about a cheaper tag can replicate it.

A better speaker. Budget tags and premium tags occupy a similar decibel band, but cabinet design, driver quality and pitch differ, and a well-designed chirp in the two-to-four-kilohertz region genuinely outperforms a cheap buzzer through a cushion. This is a modest advantage that gets overstated in reviews.

A form factor. Card-shaped tags that fit a card slot, rechargeable tags, tags with a loop moulded in, tags in leather sleeves — these are design and tooling costs, and if the shape is the thing you need, the shape is worth paying for. A coin tag simply does not fit some jobs.

Longevity of support. A tag from a company that still exists in five years will still be receiving whatever platform-level changes matter. This is a real risk with the cheapest end of the market, and it is not visible on a specification sheet.

Dual-network operation. A handful of products register on more than one platform's finding network. That has genuine value for a household split between phone ecosystems, and it costs money.

What the extra money does not buy

Network coverage. This is the misconception worth correcting, because it drives a lot of overspending. A finding tag's real reach comes from the crowd-sourced network of phones listening for it, and that network is the platform owner's, not the tag maker's. A certified budget tag on the same network gets exactly the same sightings, at exactly the same moments, as the most expensive tag on that network. You cannot buy a better network; you can only choose which one you join.

Bluetooth range. Every coin-cell tag in this category runs at similar low transmit power, because the alternative is a flat battery. Advertised ranges differ mostly in how the measurement was done. Positional accuracy when it is out of range. The pin you see comes from a passing stranger's phone and inherits that phone's location error. No tag, at any price, improves it.

The trade-off nobody weighs properly: batteries

Premium and budget tags have both gone in two directions here, and the choice is genuinely finely balanced.

A user-replaceable coin cell means a tag is a consumable with a two-minute service every couple of years, at a cost of a couple of pounds. It also means the tag can be sealed against water only to a point, because the case has to open.

A sealed rechargeable tag never needs a cell bought, and can be made very watertight. It also needs a cable every few months, which is precisely the kind of small recurring chore that ends with three dead tags in a drawer. The failure mode of a coin cell is a notification and a supermarket trip; the failure mode of a rechargeable is forgetting.

For things you handle daily, either works. For a spare key in a drawer, a tool case used twice a year or a bag in the loft, the replaceable cell is the better engineering choice, and that is not a price question at all.

The arithmetic most people get wrong

Households do not need one tag. They need a tag on the keys, a tag on the spare keys, a tag in the work bag, a tag in the case that only comes out in summer, and one for whichever family member loses things most. Five is a normal number once you start.

At that scale the per-tag price stops being a rounding error and becomes the decision. Five premium tags with Ultra Wideband is a serious purchase. Five budget tags on the same network is not. And the honest observation is that four of those five placements never need an arrow — they need a map that says which building and a buzzer that says which drawer.

So the useful question is not "cheap or expensive" but "how many of my losses are the last-three-metres kind?" If the answer is most of them, buy the arrow, for the one or two items where it matters. If the answer is hardly any, the money is better spent on covering more objects.

A considered recommendation

Buy the expensive tag when you genuinely lose things within a room and cannot find them by ear — a hearing impairment makes this decisive — or when the shape you need only exists at that price, or when you want one tag on the single most valuable item and the arrow is worth it for that item alone.

Buy the cheaper tag, in quantity, when your losses are of the "which room, which building, which café" kind, which for most people is nearly all of them. Make sure whatever you buy is certified for the network you are joining, because an uncertified tag on a proprietary app is the one false economy in this market that really does bite.
