How far does a Bluetooth tracker work? The honest answer

How far does a Bluetooth tracker work? In the open, with clear air between your phone and the tag, about 60 metres — roughly 200 feet. Put two brick walls and a person in the way and you will get a fraction of that. Both answers are true, and neither is the number that decides whether a tag is useful to you. This is what the figure actually measures, what eats it, and what happens the moment the link drops.

Where the 60 metre figure comes from

Every Bluetooth tag on the market runs a low-power radio in the 2.4 GHz band, and every manufacturer quotes the same sort of headline distance because they all measure it the same way: two devices, line of sight, nothing in between, ideally outdoors. That is a legitimate engineering measurement. It is also a best case that almost nobody experiences, in the same way that a car's quoted fuel economy is a real number obtained on a rolling road.

The physics is not mysterious. A coin-cell tag transmits at a tiny fraction of a watt, because it has to run for years on a battery the size of a five-pence piece. Signal strength falls away with distance regardless of obstacles, and 2.4 GHz happens to be a frequency that water absorbs well. Your body is mostly water. So is a full rucksack, a coat, a dog and a crowd of people at a bus stop.

How far does a Bluetooth tracker work indoors?

Indoors, treat the quoted figure as a ceiling and work down from it. A rough guide, from what owners report rather than from a chamber:

Two practical consequences follow. First, a normal UK house or flat is well inside the working envelope, which is the case that matters for keys down the side of an armchair. Second, if you are imagining standing in a car park pinging a tag three rows away, the honest answer is that you may be disappointed, and that is a limitation of Bluetooth as a technology rather than of any one product.

The obstacles that cost you the most

Metal is the worst. A steel toolbox, a car body, a laptop with an aluminium shell, even a foil-lined crisp packet will attenuate or reflect the signal badly. Water is next: a body, a fish tank, a full water bottle sitting between the two devices. Masonry and plasterboard cost you less than people expect, which is why the tag under the stairs usually still answers. Other 2.4 GHz traffic — a busy Wi-Fi network, a microwave in mid-cycle — adds noise rather than blocking the link outright, so you tend to see slower connections rather than none.

This is the part that people arriving on a range question usually have not been told, and it changes the whole calculation. When a tag falls out of Bluetooth reach of your own phone, it does not go dark. It carries on quietly broadcasting an anonymous identifier that rotates on a schedule. Any passing Apple device that hears that identifier reports an encrypted position to Apple, which only your Apple Account holds the key to decrypt.

So the useful range of the tag is not 60 metres and never was. It is wherever Apple devices happen to go, which in a British town centre, an airport, a train or a busy high street means the map keeps updating without you or anybody else doing a thing. There is no SIM in the tag, no data plan, and nothing for you to pay each month; other people's phones do the carrying, anonymously and without their knowledge or yours.

The trade is honesty about latency. A relayed position is a timestamped snapshot from whenever a device last walked past, not a live feed. In a busy place that can be seconds old. On a moorland footpath at six in the morning it might be hours old, or there might be nothing at all until somebody wanders through.

Two ranges, two different jobs

It helps to stop thinking about one range and start thinking about two behaviours that hand over to each other.

  • Inside the Bluetooth link, you get a sound. Your phone tells the tag to shout, and an 80–100 dB buzzer will lead you to a cushion, a coat pocket or the bottom of a kit bag far more reliably than a dot on a map ever could.
  • Outside the Bluetooth link, you get a place and a time. The map narrows the search to a street, a building or a vehicle, and the timestamp tells you whether you are chasing something live or something an hour cold.

Test the range of your own tag in ten minutes

Do not take anybody's word for it, including ours. Measure the thing in the environment you will actually use it in.

  1. Put the tag on a garden wall, a bench or a fence post at chest height, clear of metal.
  2. Open Find My on your iPhone, select the item, and keep the Play Sound button on screen.
  3. Walk away in a straight line, tapping Play Sound every twenty paces, and note where it stops responding.
  4. Repeat the walk with the tag in the bag or box you plan to keep it in. Compare.
  5. Now do it indoors: tag in the kitchen drawer, you at the top of the house.

Ten minutes of that tells you more about your house than any specification sheet, and it means you will not be guessing on the day something goes missing.
