A tracker for drone and RC kit: honest limits and real uses
If you are considering a tracker for drone or model kit, the first thing worth saying is the least commercial one: a coin-cell Bluetooth tag will not bring back a flyaway. It has no GPS, it does not know where it is, and there is nobody standing in the middle of a field with an iPhone to overhear it. Anyone implying otherwise is selling you a fantasy. What a tag genuinely does for this hobby is narrower, more mundane and, in the balance, still worth the twenty grams and the fifteen pounds — and this piece works through why, because the trade-offs here are less obvious than in most categories.
The flyaway problem, and why Bluetooth cannot solve it
A flyaway ends with an aircraft on the ground somewhere you did not intend, often hundreds of metres away, usually in a crop field, a wood, a reservoir margin or a hedge. The reason a Bluetooth tag is powerless is worth stating precisely rather than hand-waving at.
A finding tag has two mechanisms. The first is a direct radio link to your own phone, good for up to a few tens of metres with clear air and much less through vegetation. The second is a crowd-sourced network: passing Apple devices hear the tag's broadcast and report an encrypted position. Both mechanisms need somebody nearby. A drone in the middle of a hundred-hectare field of oilseed rape has neither your phone in range nor a stranger walking past, and the position you are shown will be the last one taken before it took off.
There is a class of product that does solve this, and it is honest to name it: a GPS beacon with its own mobile or LoRa link, which knows its own position and reports it over a network of its own. Those cost more, weigh more and usually carry a subscription. The weight rule you cannot ignore
Here is the trade-off that catches people out, and it is a regulatory one rather than an aerodynamic one.
UK drone rules are banded by mass, and 250 g is the threshold where several obligations change. A typical finding tag weighs about 10 g. On a 700 g airframe that is nothing. On a drone the manufacturer deliberately designed to come in at 249 g — and several of the most popular models are engineered to exactly that figure — adding a tag can push it over the line and into a different set of requirements for where you may fly and what you must have done before you do.
The Civil Aviation Authority's drone and model aircraft registration service is the place to check what applies to your aircraft and your intended flying, and it is worth checking before you stick anything to an airframe rather than afterwards.
The second weight consideration is trim. Ten grams on the outside of a small airframe changes the centre of gravity, and on a fixed-wing model that is not a trivial matter. If it is going on the aircraft at all, it goes as close to the existing centre of gravity as the structure allows.
Where a tag genuinely earns its place
Having taken the airframe largely off the table, the useful placements are the ones nobody thinks about, and they cover the losses that actually happen most weeks.
The flight case. This is the single best use. A case of batteries, props, a controller and a laptop is expensive, portable and left in car boots, club huts and hotel rooms. It is also the thing most likely to be stolen, and the thing whose loss actually ends your season.
The transmitter. An RC transmitter put down on a table at a club field and picked up by somebody else, or left on a fence post, is a recurring and expensive nuisance. A tag on the neck strap costs nothing in weight and solves it.
The car keys you fly with. Losing keys in long grass at the end of a session is a far more common disaster than losing an aircraft, and it is the one a loud buzzer solves outright.
A downed model in a hedge, at close range. This is the one genuine on-aircraft use. If you saw roughly where it went in and you are within a few tens of metres, being able to make the model chirp at 80–100 dB while you work along a hedgerow is meaningfully faster than parting brambles by hand. It is a last-hundred-metres tool, not a search tool.
Weighing it up
The case for a tag on RC kit is not really about the aircraft at all. It is that the hobby involves a lot of expensive, portable, easily-mislaid ancillary equipment that gets moved between a house, a car and a field several times a month, and that is precisely the loss pattern a cheap finding tag is good at.
The case against putting one on the airframe is stronger than the case for: weight matters, regulatory bands matter, and the scenario people buy it for — the flyaway — is the one scenario it cannot address. The honest recommendation is therefore to tag the case and the transmitter, to consider a dedicated beacon if you fly anything you could not afford to lose, and to treat the on-aircraft placement as an optional extra only where mass genuinely is not a constraint.
