A Bluetooth tracker for car owners: the honest limits
People buy a Bluetooth tracker for car use with one of two problems in mind, and only one of them is solvable. If the problem is "I cannot remember which level I parked on", a coin-cell tag is a genuinely good answer. If the problem is "I want to get my car back when somebody takes it", it is not, and no amount of clever marketing changes the underlying physics. This post explains the difference properly, because the gap between those two expectations is where the bad reviews live.
Why a tag cannot follow a moving car
A finding tag has no idea where it is. It transmits a short anonymous packet a few times a second and depends entirely on somebody else's phone hearing it and reporting the sighting. That model works beautifully when the tagged object sits still in a place people walk past. It works badly, and sometimes not at all, when the object is moving quickly.
Three things stack up against you:
Contact time. A phone needs to be within range long enough to register the tag and log a position. A car doing 60 mph past a pedestrian is in range for a couple of seconds at best. Sometimes that is enough; often it is not.
Steel. A car body is a metal box, and 2.4 GHz does not pass through metal — it reflects off it. A tag in a glovebox, a boot or under a seat is substantially shielded from anything outside the car. This is the same reason phone signal drops in a multi-storey.
Where cars go. Motorways at night, industrial estates, container yards, lock-ups. These are exactly the low-footfall places where a crowd-sourced network has no crowd.
Put the three together and you get an occasional, delayed, unreliable trail rather than a track. Cars have been recovered with the help of a tag — it does happen, and it makes the news when it does — but designing your security around the exception is a poor plan.
What a Bluetooth tracker for car use does do well
Now the useful half, which is genuinely useful.
Finding the car you parked
Airport long stay, a retail park, a multi-storey, a festival field, an unfamiliar city. Your phone records where it last had a solid Bluetooth link with the tag, which in practice is where you got out and walked away. That is a far better answer than trying to remember whether it was level three or four, and it costs nothing to have running in the background.
Finding the keys, which is the real risk
Replacing a modern car key is expensive and slow — a coded fob, a dealer or auto-locksmith visit, often a day without the car. The keys are also the thing you lose several times a year rather than once a decade. Finding the spare
The spare key is the one nobody can locate when the main set finally goes missing, because it was put "somewhere safe" in 2019. Tag it once and the problem is permanently solved.
Keeping track of what lives in the car
The roof box, the bike rack, the child's booster seat that migrates between two households, the hire car's parking permit wallet. These are the small logistical annoyances of car ownership and a tag handles them all quietly.
If your car is stolen
Call the police first, on 101, or 999 if the theft is in progress. Give them the registration, and mention the tag and any positions you can see — but treat those positions as information for the police, not as an address to drive to.
Do not attempt a recovery yourself. Vehicle theft is organised, the people involved are not deterred by an owner turning up, and there is a long record of confrontations going badly. A car is insured. You are not replaceable.
If recovery is genuinely your priority, fit a hardwired, subscription-based vehicle tracker — ideally a Thatcham-accredited one, which your insurer may also recognise. Those are a different product solving a different problem, and no coin-cell tag substitutes for one.
How BlueTag works around a car
