Bluetooth tracker for keys: the complete UK guide
Most people who buy a Bluetooth tracker for keys buy the wrong one first. Not because the radio is bad, but because they judged it on the range figure printed on the box and not on the three things that decide whether a tag survives a year on a keyring: how it attaches, how loud it is, and whether the battery is yours to change. This guide works through all three, then covers where keys actually go missing, which is rarely where people search.
Start with attachment, not range
A keyring is a hostile environment. It swings against a thigh, gets sat on, drops onto tiled floors, goes through pockets full of grit and lives in a coat that spends half the year damp. The mounting point is the first thing to fail, and there are three common designs:
- A moulded hole through the case. The plastic of the tag is the mounting point, so there is nothing to snap off and nothing extra to buy. This is what you want.
- A separate holder or sleeve. Common with round tags that have no hole of their own. The sleeve frequently costs as much as the tag, adds bulk, and is the part that splits.
- An adhesive pad. Fine for a TV remote, hopeless for keys.
The second question is thickness. A tag around 9 mm deep sits flat against the keys rather than levering them apart, which matters more than it sounds when the whole bunch is going into a jeans pocket. Anything much thicker turns a set of keys into a brick.
A Bluetooth tracker for keys lives or dies on the buzzer
Here is the uncomfortable truth about lost keys: the map almost never helps. Keys are usually lost inside a building you are already standing in. The map tells you what you already know — they are in the house — and then the search is exactly as manual as it was before you spent money.
The buzzer is what converts a room into a cushion. Anything in the 80–100 dB region will carry through a sofa, a coat pocket, a laundry basket or the gap behind a chest of drawers, which covers the overwhelming majority of real losses. When you are comparing tags, compare loudness first and range second, because a quiet tag with excellent range solves a problem you rarely have.
Where keys are actually found
From what owners describe, the recurring hiding places are depressingly consistent:
- Down the side or back of an armchair or sofa.
- Inside the coat you wore yesterday, still on the hook.
- In a bag pocket you have already checked twice.
- On a surface covered by something else — post, a tea towel, a coat.
- Left in a door lock, which is the one case where the map does help.
Four of those five are a sound problem. Only the fifth is a location problem, and it is also the one worth solving urgently.
Battery: replaceable, or a disposable tag?
Some tags are sealed. When the cell dies, the whole thing is landfill and you buy another. Others take a standard CR2032 coin cell that costs a couple of pounds in any supermarket, and the case twists open to let you change it.
The difference over five years is significant, both financially and environmentally. A tag with a swappable CR2032 typically runs up to two years on a cell, so a five-year life means two battery changes and no new hardware. The alert that stops the problem happening
The most useful feature on a keyring tag is not finding — it is not losing. A left-behind alert watches for the tag dropping out of Bluetooth range of your phone and tells you there and then, with the last confirmed position already pinned.
That is the difference between walking back to the café you left ten minutes ago and reconstructing an entire afternoon from memory the following morning. You can mark trusted locations — home, the office — so it does not nag you every time you put the keys in the bowl by the door.
What to check before you buy

That last row deserves emphasis. Plenty of tags work only with iPhones, and some work only with Android handsets. Buying the wrong side of that line is the most common and most annoying mistake in this category, particularly when a tag is bought as a gift.
