How loud is a Bluetooth tracker? Decibels in plain English

How loud is a Bluetooth tracker? Almost all of them sit somewhere between 80 and 100 decibels measured close up, which is roughly a doorbell rather than a fire alarm. That is loud enough to find a set of keys under a cushion two rooms away and nowhere near loud enough to find a rucksack in a busy street. The gap between those two facts is what this article is about.

What the decibel figure on a listing actually describes

A decibel number on its own is meaningless without a distance, and almost no tracker listing gives one. The convention in the industry is to measure at ten centimetres, which flatters every product equally.

Two pieces of physics decide what reaches your ear:

  • Sound obeys an inverse-square law. Level drops by about 6 dB each time the distance doubles. A tag measured at 95 dB up close is around 89 dB at twice that distance, 83 dB at four times, and so on down.
  • The scale is logarithmic. A 10 dB rise is perceived as roughly twice as loud, so the difference between an 85 dB tag and a 95 dB tag is real and obvious, while the difference between 95 dB and 97 dB is not.

For a reference point that is actually standardised: the domestic smoke alarm standard BS EN 14604 requires an alarm to produce at least 85 dB(A) at three metres. Tags are not measured that way and are not in that league. They are not meant to wake a household; they are meant to be findable in a quiet room.

The honest summary: a tag's speaker is a household instrument. It solves the ten-minute hunt in your own home, and it does that several times a week for years. It does not solve a field, a car park or a railway platform.

Pitch beats volume, and nobody advertises pitch

This is the part listings never mention. Soft furnishings absorb high frequencies less predictably than people assume, and human hearing is most sensitive in the two-to-four-kilohertz region — which is precisely why alarm clocks, smoke detectors and reversing beepers all live there.

A tag that chirps in that band at 85 dB will out-perform a tag that buzzes at 200 Hz at 95 dB, through a cushion, every time. It is also why a repeating chirp beats a continuous tone: your ear locates a repeated onset far better than it locates a steady drone, and the gaps let you move and listen again.

So when two tags quote similar numbers, the one that sounds sharper and more insistent is the one that will actually be found.

Four ways to make the sound work harder

  1. Put the tag where sound can escape. An outside pocket, a zip pull, a key ring hanging loose. Buried in the middle of a bag, half the volume is absorbed before it leaves.
  2. Silence the room before you press. Pause the television, stop the extractor fan, then ring it. Ten seconds of quiet is worth 10 dB.
  3. Ring it in short bursts and move. Stand still, ring, listen, take four paces, repeat. Triangulating by ear beats walking around with a continuous noise going.
  4. Do not expect it outdoors. Past a garden, switch to the map and treat the speaker as a last-ten-metres tool.

Frequently asked

Can I make the tracker louder? No. The output is fixed in hardware and there is no volume control in the Find My app. What you can change is where the tag sits and how quiet the room is, and between them those are worth more than any advertised decibel difference.

Does the speaker get quieter as the battery drains? Slightly, towards the very end of a cell's life, because the driver is being fed less current. Long before it becomes a problem you will have had a low-battery notice on your phone. Our guide to replacing the CR2032 covers the swap.

Will the sound work if the tag is out of range? No. Playing a sound requires a live Bluetooth connection between your phone and the tag. Out of range you get a last-known position instead, contributed by a passing Apple device, and the tag stays silent until you are close enough to reach it again.
